Seventh Generation Advisors is a nonprofit environmental advocacy group which advocates for sustainable environmental policy.
Opposition to Nuclear Energy
Seventh Generation opposes the use of nuclear energy. In April 2020 the nonprofit’s Facebook page posted that nuclear energy was a “dangerous technology” that had poisoned the Earth for decades. 1 A June 2013 blogpost authored by Seventh Generation founder Terry Tamminen was titled “Nuclear Power is So 20th Century,” and recommended leaving it there, along with coal, oil and natural gas. 2
Nuclear power plants produce no carbon dioxide or other greenhouse gas emissions, and as of 2021 accounted for 19 percent of American electricity production—the largest source of zero carbon electricity in the United States. 3 An October 2018 proposal from The Nature Conservancy noted that zero-carbon nuclear plants produced 7.8 percent of total world energy output and recommended reducing carbon emissions by increasing nuclear capacity to 33 percent of total world energy output. 4
