Color of Change is an online organizing organization created by the Obama administration’s former “green jobs czar” Van Jones and the former director of grassroots mobilization for MoveOn.org, James Rucker, in 2005. 1 Jones and Rucker formed the group to publicize then-President George W. Bush’s perceived neglect of African-American communities after Hurricane Katrina.2
Color of Change’s web-based “campaigns” employ petitions, shareable social media images, and corporate boycotts3 to advocate for left-of-center policies.4 Color of Change has run campaigns that seek to attack conservative individuals, silence conservative media pundits, and defund conservative organizations.
Color of Change also uses its campaigns to advocate for left-of-center criminal enforcement and domestic policies. In recent years the organization has pushed to eliminate “stand your ground” self-defense laws 5 and reduce prison sentences.6 The organization has also pushed for tax increases,7 higher government spending,8government-controlled healthcare,9 race-based environmentalist legislation, 10 and a number of labor handouts including both state11 and federal minimum wage increases.12
Organizational Overview
On September 1, 2005, Moveon.org’s then-director of grassroots mobilization James Rucker and future Obama administration environmental policy aide Van Jones created ColorOfChange13 as an offshoot from the Citizen Engagement Laboratory (CEL), in response to what they perceived as neglect of black Americans by President George W. Bush’s relief and restoration efforts.14
Described as a “MoveOn for black people”4 and an “online civil rights group”1 the organization uses internet tools3 to advocate for left-of-center policies that “advance the power and political strength of Black people.” 4
In October 2020, Color of Change recognized its employee union, which joined the Washington-Baltimore NewsGuild. The employees formed the union after expressing concerns about job security and perceived arbitrary firings. 15
Campaigns
Color of Change engages its members through internet-based “campaigns” such as petitions, shareable social media images, or corporate boycotts. 3 Color of Change’s campaigns have often opposed conservative politicians, and sought to silence conservative media advocates, and organizations.
Dave Weigel wrote in Slate that Color of Change’s campaigns follows a predictable strategy, whereby the organization first targets a conservative it accuses of racial animus then “demand[s] that the conservative lose his platform” and finally “melt[s] the phones and inboxes until victory.”16
Nomination of Samuel Alito
In 2006, Color of Change ran a petition campaign opposing President George W. Bush’s nomination of Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court.17
Fox News
In 2007, the organization condemned Fox News claiming that the news organization “consistently attacked Black people” and sought to “shame” the Congressional Black Caucus Institute into dropping out of a planned partnership with Fox News to co-host presidential debates.18
In 2009, Color of Change created a petition drive attacking Fox News’ corporate advertisers in an effort to force Glenn Beck off cable television19 for alleged “racially divisive rhetoric.” 20
Andrew Breitbart
Color of Change, in partnership with CREDO Action, submitted over 125,000 petitions that pushed executives at ABC News and its parent company Disney to disallow conservative blogger Andrew Breitbart from participating in ABC’s 2010 election night coverage.21
American Legislative Exchange Council
Also see American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) (Nonprofit)
In 2011, in association with the Center for Media and Democracy, Common Cause, and People for the American Way,22 Color of Change launched a campaign urging businesses to stop funding the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC)23 — an association of state legislators supporting free-market policies.24
“Bloodmoney”
Also see Southern Poverty Law Center (Nonprofit)
In 2018, Color of Change launched its “Bloodmoney” campaign to halt financial service and credit card companies like Discover, Visa, American Express, and Mastercard from processing payments to conservative organizations falsely accused of being “hate groups” by Color of Change and the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC).25
The group accused payment processing companies of “profit[ing] from white supremacy by tolerating the use of their services by hate groups,” falsely linking conservative organizations to the June 2015 shooting of an African American church in Charleston, South Carolina by white supremacist Dylann Roof, and violence at the 2017 Unite the Right rally by white supremacists in Charlottesville, Virginia.25
In September 2018, it was reported that Color of Change pressured Mastercard into refusing to process donations to the conservative David Horowitz Freedom Center, a decision that was later reversed following public outcry. Color of Change’s list of supposed “white nationalist groups” closely matched that of the Southern Poverty Law Center’s “thoroughly discredited list of hate groups, while excluding black racist groups, such as Louis Farrakhan’s Nation of Islam, from the list”:26
“Even so, the list of ‘white supremacists’ that Color of Change had tried to force credit card companies to stop doing business with included a black church, organizations run by Jews, Arabs, and former Muslims, not to mention the American College of Pediatricians.”
2008 Presidential Election
In 2008, Color of Change ran a letter writing campaign against 2008 Republican presidential nominee John McCain alleging that his campaign was “relying on a strategy of race-baiting and fear-mongering.”27
2016 Presidential Election
In 2016, Color of Change called upon businesses to boycott the Republican National Convention.28 The organization’s former executive director and now president, Rashad Robinson, claimed that any company that gave money to the 2016 RNC was perpetuating “white supremacy.”28
Facebook Boycott
In 2020, Color of Change called for a boycott of Facebook for failing to prevent hate speech and misinformation. The group claimed that over 1,000 businesses joined the boycott and refused to advertise on the social media platform. 29
Campaign Against Police TV Shows
In 2020, Color of Change successfully lobbied for the cancellation of the television show “Cops” which was shown on Paramount Network. Previously, the group lobbied for the cancellation of “Cops” on Fox Network, which canceled the show in 2013. Color of Change claimed the show glorified police officers and portrayed low-income people as villains. 29
Color of Change also criticized scripted crime shows for “advancing distorted representations of crime, justice, race, and gender in media and culture.” The group also attacked the shows for their lack of diversity among showrunners and writers with few, if any, Black writers on the shows. 29
Kicking Trump Off Social Media
After the January 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol building, Color of Change joined with other left-of-center activists to demand Facebook and Twitter kick then-President Donald Trump off their platforms. The group urged its supporters to pressure the leadership of both companies to ban Trump from their platforms, which the companies ultimately did, at least temporarily. 30
Country Music Association
In November 2021, Color of Change launched a campaign against the Country Music Association demanding more diversity in the group. The group demanded that the CMA adopt a diversity rider, expand beyond its white fanbase, and undergo a “racial equity audit.” The group originally complained to the CMA in September 2021 after the group nominated country music singer Morgan Wallen’s Dangerous: The Double Album in the collaborative Album of the Year category. Wallen had previously been ruled ineligible for award nominations after he used a racial slur. Eventually, the two sides broke off contact and Color of Change went public with its campaign. Color of Change complained about what it called the systemic racism in the country music industry including the CMA’s all white board of directors and awards criteria that the group alleges excludes Black women artists. 31
Issue Advocacy
Color of Change has run a large number of campaigns to weaken state-level law enforcement measures.13 Color of Change’s current criminal enforcement policy campaigns seek to end the practices of cash bail6 and probation.32
One of the organization’s first campaigns in 2007 raised funds for the legal defense of six African-American students charged with the beating of a high-school student in Jena, Louisiana.1
Color of Change waged a multi-state campaign to eliminate “stand your ground” self-defense laws after the contested shooting of an African-American Florida teenager.5
In 2014, Color of Change successfully pushed New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio to abandon the city’s “stop and frisk” policing tactic.13
Outside criminal justice policies, Color of Change opposed President Donald Trump’s attempts to repeal Obamacare33 supported so-called “Medicare for All” legislation which would institute a government-controlled healthcare system.9 The organization has also advocated against so-called “environmental racism” and called for strict environmentalist legislation.10
Color of Change opposed multiple conservative budget proposals3435 has supported massive tax increases.7
Color of Change has called for a number of labor handouts including both state11and federal minimum wage increases.12Additionally the organization ran a corporate campaign against Walmart calling upon the company to enact a $15 minimum wage.36
In April 2021, Color of Change called for the breakup of big tech companies, claiming that the tech companies only change their policies in more left-leaning directions after pressure campaigns. The group also claimed, “Disinfo is a violent threat to our health as a society, to be honest.” 37
In November 2021, Color of Change joined with other civil rights groups to push the People’s Response Act which called for the creation of a public safety division within the U.S. Department of Human Health and Services. The legislation would also fund grants for civilian first responders as an alternative to police. 38
Color of Change joined the Just Majority coalition which advocated “court-packing,” the addition of seats to the U.S. Supreme Court. Capital Research Center reported that the coalition claimed the Supreme Court needed to be packed because of “certain “illegitimate rulings” that were allegedly based on “politics and not the law” when they were decided by the court’s “unethical” conservative majority.” 39
In August 2024, Color of Change joined a coalition of groups helping Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty push left-leaning criminal justice reform policies. The coalition agreed to meet regularly and produce recommendations for Moriarty. Moriarty was elected in 2022 on a platform of more restrictions for police and more lenient treatment of criminals, especially young ones. 40
In January 2025, Color of Change released a report claiming that 38 percent of Black households in the rural South did not have internet access at home. The report also claimed that these same households were dealing with the tech industry’s waste and pollution. The group claimed this was the result of “neglect and corporate exploitation.” The group called on Congress to pass the Digital Equity Act and renew the Affordable Connectivity Program, both of which would subsidize internet access. 41
In March 2025, Color of Change released a statement opposing the passage of a Continuing Resolution which prevented a government shutdown. The statement condemned the resolution for including “cuts to essential programs critical for black families.” 42
Democracy Initiative
In 2013, Color of Change was reported to be a partner in the Democracy Initiative, an informal gathering of approximately 35 left-of-center advocacy groups that came together to organize their advocacy efforts on an array of left-of-center issues. Other groups in the Democracy Initiative included the League of Conservation Voters, the AFL-CIO, SEIU, Common Cause, Voto Latino, Demos, People for the American Way, National Wildlife Federation, the Center for American Progress, and the United Auto Workers (UAW). 43
False Claims
In 2014, left-leaning fact-checker Politifact found a Color of Change flyer claiming that Republicans were “trying to impeach our president” (at the time, Barack Obama) to be “mostly false.” 44
In 2010 the blog NewsBusters, a project of conservative media watchdog group the Media Research Center, called attention to the fact that in its “Turn Off Fox” campaign, Color of Change relied upon demonstrable falsehoods to criticize Fox for the same behavior.45
Layoffs and NLRB Investigation
In 2023, Color of Change laid off 54 employees in three rounds as part of a strategy to cut costs. The former employees took the case to the National Labor Relations Board claiming that the layoffs were illegal because the group did not notify and bargain with the Color of Change Union, a division of the Washington-Baltimore NewsGuild, before laying the employees off. In September 2024, the NLRB ruled in favor of the employees and ordered them reinstated with back pay. The group was given 14 days to comply with the ruling. 46
One week after the NLRB ruling, Color of Change president Rashad Robinson resigned. “While Color Of Change will continue to fight for more and more wins, I have made the very hard decision to pass on my leadership role at Color Of Change after the election and take on new ways of fighting for justice in our country,” Robinson wrote in a statement. “The organization is in a place where it’s ready for me to leave.” In response to his resignation, the Color of Change Union called Robinson’s leadership “toxic” and accused him of failing to acknowledge or take accountability for his failures. The union accused him of creating “a narrative that is disconnected from reality.” A union representative accused Color of Change of financial mismanagement, spending the bulk of its salaries on executives and leadership, and claimed that the California Attorney General was investigating the group for not filing certain taxes in several years. Color of Change said it would appeal the NLRB ruling. 47
Financials
According to Color of Change’s 2023 tax return, the group had $4,023,965 in revenue, $11,601,195 in expenses, and $17,509,721 in net assets. Then-president Rashad Robinson made $608,432 in salary and other compensation. 48
In 2016, Color of Change’s executive director said that neither Color of Change nor Color of Change PAC took money from big corporations.28 However, the Washington Times reported that billionaire philanthropist George Soros gave $500,000 to Color of Change in 2015. 49
Additionally in 2015 Color of Change was listed as a partner organization with Democracy Alliance. 50
In June 2020, actress Jennifer Aniston donated $1 million to the group. 51 Actor Brad Pitt, her ex-husband, matched her donation later that month. 52
People
Van Jones, who would go on to be an Obama White House aide and commentator for CNN, co-founded the Color of Change. Jones admitted in 2005 that he had been a communist and “rowdy nationalist,” referring to his participation in 1992 Rodney King protests as a law school student. 53
In March 2009, the Obama administration appointed Jones as his Special Advisor for Green Jobs, commonly sloganized as “green jobs czar.”54 Roughly six months later, Jones resigned from his post due to a revelations of his background, which was too radical to be associated with the administration.55 The Washington Post noted: “His involvement with the now-defunct Bay Area radical group Standing Together to Organize a Revolutionary Movement (STORM), which had Marxist roots, also emerged as an issue. And on Saturday, his advocacy on behalf of death-row inmate Mumia Abu-Jamal, who was convicted of fatally shooting a Philadelphia police officer in 1981, threatened to further deepen the controversy.”56
James Rucker is a co-founder and former president of the Color of Change. In addition, Rucker helped start the Citizen Engagement Laboratory (CEL) in 2008, which builds on the work of Color of Change and helps to finance it. 57
For two years starting in 2003, Rucker worked as director of MoveOn.org’s grassroots mobilization.58 He also sat on the MoveOn.org Civic Action board. Rucker has sat on the board of the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) 59
Notable and Former Staff
Portia Allen-Kyle is the interim executive director of Color of Change. She was previously the Senior Advisor for Equity, Policy and Stakeholder Engagement in the Office of Civil Rights at the U.S. Department of Transportation. 60
Rashad Robinson is the former president of the 501(c)(3) arm of Color of Change, the executive director of Color of Change Education Fund, and he previously served as senior director of programs for the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD). 61 Robinson left the group in September 2024. 47
Keith Goodman is the former Chief of Staff and Operations for the Color of Change groups. Goodman previously worked for the AFL-CIO, developing targeting strategies for the 2004 election; the Democratic National Committee; and the 2008 Presidential campaign of Barack Obama.62 He also worked from 2009 to 2011 for former U.S. Vice President Al Gore’s Alliance for Climate Protection, which is now a part of the Climate Reality Project.63
